The History of Shawarma

April 5, 2024

Shawarma traces back to the Ottoman Empire, where meat was cooked on a vertical spit and shaved off in thin slices.

The word comes from the Turkish 'cevirme', meaning 'turning'. Today it is loved on street corners from Istanbul to Aligarh.
